Lace Cowl Knitting Pattern



Pattern Level: Intermediate 

Materials:
Worsted weight cotton yarn about 200 yds
Size 10 straight knitting needles
Stitch holders
1- size 3 sew-on snap
1-1 in. button
Coordinating sewing thread
Sewing needle
Tapestry needle

Gauge: 4 st x 5 rows = 1 in. (in stockinette st)
Finished Measurements: cowl measures 28 in. long when laid flat, and neck height measures 3 ½ in

Chevron & Feather pattern:
Row 1: (RS) *k1, yo, k4, k2tog, sl 1, k1, psso, k4, yo, rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2: p.  Repeat these 2 rows for pattern.

This cowl is worked as two pieces, and then grafted together in finishing. The snaps are sewn into the underside of the cowl making them hidden from view.

Petal & Stems: (make 2)

CO 40 st. Set-up Lace Pattern: Starting with row 1, work “Chevron & Feather” pattern over 40 st until piece measures 3 in. from cast on end WS.

Decrease Section:
Row 1: (RS) *k1, yo, k3, k3tog, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k3, yo—rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 2 & all WS rows: p.
Row 3: *k1, yo, k2, k3tog, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k2, yo—rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 5: *k1, yo, k1, k3tog, sl 1, k2tog, psso, k1, yo—rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 7: *k1, yo, k3tog, sl 1, k2tog, psso, yo—rep from * to last st, k1.
Row 8: p—16 st remain on needle.

Set-up Ribbing:
Row 1: (RS) k across, increasing 11 st evenly across—27 st remain on needle.
Row 2: *p3, k3—rep from * across

Continue in ribbing pattern as est until ribbed section measures 8 in.
cut yarn with about a 36 in. tail, and move st to a st holder.

Finishing -With WS edges facing, graft two sections together using the Kitchener st.
Sew button: with RS facing, measure 3 ¼” down from grafted neck seam of the right stem, and sew button at the center of the row.
Snaps: Using opposite stem, and with WS facing, measure 3 ¼” down from grafted neck seam, and sew in the female half of the snap in the center of the row.
With RS facing, lay piece so that the button stem is on the right. Sew the male half of the snap at the bottom outermost edge of the right petal section, about halfway from the CO edge.
Weave in loose ends.
